I doubt you'll remember, but a couple of months ago you generously took a half hour of your time to brief me up on the ins and outs of what it takes to cool a buil5 396/402 L78 BBC. With around 500hp to the crank, not only was a rebuilt stock 1969 (Camaro SS) radiator ridiculously inadequate, but the Champion 3/8" tubes with Spall single 2200 fan also proved unable to cool this engine when it idled back from a long run on a hot day. The Champion would keep in mid-temp range on the highway, but slow down for traffic on a 90 degree day, and hello boilover.
Since I was ignorant and Champion was telling me there was nothing they sold with more capacity (and, of course, "We've never had this problem before..."), I added an electric Stewart booster pump tied to the fan circuit to add cool water CFM to the engine at idle and +185 degrees. While this certainly helped, the engine was still running hot at idle...as in more than 200 degrees.
You convinced me to try your set up with the 1 1/4" tubes and the variable speed dual 3200cfm fans, and I must tell you, the difference has been night and day. The engine is running at all speeds and ambient temps at least 30% cooler and once the engine gets to185, the fans come on, as well as the booster water pump, and even after a hot run and at idle or in stop and go traffic, it takes about 45 seconds for that engine temp to drop from mid-range temp to well below 185.
Consider this an enthusiastic endorsement and sincere thank you for your advice and what has proven to be a superior solution to the problem.
A couple of pix for your files and please feel free to use this note as a review and the pix if you'd like.
All best and thanks again.
